In John Grisham's legal thriller Gray Mountain, a Wall Street lawyer's life is upended by the 2008 financial crisis. Samantha Kofer, a high-flying associate, is furloughed and sent to work for a legal aid clinic for one year in the heart of Virginia's Appalachian coal country. Moving from Manhattan to the small town of Brady, Samantha is thrown into a world of poverty and environmental destruction caused by the powerful coal industry. Initially out of her depth, she begins to assist her mentor, a seasoned lawyer, with cases against Big Coal, which has a track record of contaminating the water supply and disregarding miners' health. When a key legal figure opposing the industry dies in a suspicious plane crash, Samantha's work turns dangerous. She must navigate the murky and corrupt local power structure, uncovering deadly secrets that some people will kill to keep hidden. The novel explores themes of corporate greed, environmentalism, and a young woman's transformation from corporate associate to defender of the vulnerable.
