Maldoror and Poems compiles the complete surviving works of Comte de Lautréamont, the pseudonym of Isidore Ducasse. The central text, Les Chants de Maldoror, is a bizarre, violent, and darkly humorous prose poem that follows the misanthropic character Maldoror, an incarnation of evil. Through nightmarish imagery, blasphemy, and stylistic shifts, the book attacks conventional morality and logic, depicting a savage world of unrestrained brutality. The volume also includes Poésies, a collection of maxims and aphorisms that, in contrast, appears to renounce the themes and nihilism of Maldoror. Lautréamont's transgressive writing was largely ignored during his short life, but it was later rediscovered by the Surrealists, who hailed it as a foundational, revelatory masterpiece. The work's hallucinatory quality and challenge to literary conventions make it one of the earliest and most influential examples of Surrealist writing.
